January Newsletter The students came off a well deserved Christmas break ready to learn and work. This week we assessed the students again with the FAST tests in reading and math. We will share these results at conferences in early February. Please make sure that your child has a set of earbuds or head phones to use at school. We have a few students who do not have any, which makes it difficult for them to use various internet resources that require sound. The media center has only a very few available for all the students, not enough for the entire school. This became a bigger problem when many students throughout the building were taking the FAST test this week. We are fortunate to have 1 to 1 devices per student in 5th grade, and use the computer often. Please see the Year book message at the end of the Newsletter. Remember next week Friday is a half day early release, and Monday January 20 the students do not have school in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Academic News Math- We have started a unit in geometry. The students are investigating triangles and quadrilaterals. Reading-The students have switched to working through the stories in their textbook. They have been discussing personification. Writing-The students are working with appositives Science-The students are studying renewable and non- renewable energy. Social-We are focusing on the beginning of settling and colonization of North America. We studied the French exploration of North America, and we discussed the first English colonies in North America. We will test on this chapter on Wednesday January 15. Additional Information Students will have a HALF DAY on January 17.
