We know this is a unique and challenging time for all of us. We want to take this opportunity to fill you in on things that we know as of this date.
1. Please notify me as soon as possible if you do not have internet access. All fifth graders will be able to check out a chrome book from school next week (more information will be provided at a later date) to be used during this time. 2. Students do not need to complete any e-learning or distance learning until March 30 (After March 27 date that the governor set) if school is not in-session. We will send further details about this when we know more information and have finished our planning. 3. Tomorrow at students assigned time, Students will be picking up ALL of their belongings from school including all textbooks, workbooks, notebooks etc. which will be needed during distance learning. They should bring their backpacks, and several bags if they have snow gear in their lockers. Their lockers should be completely cleaned out. Supplies in the classroom have already been placed in their lockers, along with their report cards. 4. Students will be able to keep library books if they have not finished reading any. IF STUDENTS WANT TO READ ANY BOOKS FROM MY PERSONAL LIBRARY THEY ARE MORE THAN WELCOME TO TAKE WHAT THEY NEED TO GET THEM THROUGH UNTIL WE ARE BACK TO OUR NORMAL ROUTINE. I DO NOT HAVE A CHECKOUT SYSTEM, EVERYTHING IS ON THE HONOR SYSTEM AND I TRUST THEY WILL GET BACK TO ME AT SOME POINT. As you know information is constantly changing, as we become aware of new information we will be in contact. Please check your email regularly and watch for updates. Thank you for continued support of your child's education during this interesting time. Please reach out with any questions you may have and I will try to answer them or find someone who can. Tom Feldewerd February Newsletter
Next week, we will have conferences on Monday and Tuesday evening. I look forward to meeting with everyone to discuss the progress the children have made, and talk about the remaining year and the changes for next year. Just as the last conference, I would like all students to attend the conference if possible. Next week we have a short week. There will be no school on Thursday February 13, Friday February 14, and Monday February 17. Because of these days off, we will have a small Valentines Party on Wednesday February 12. The students voted not to have the little Valentine’s Card, but rather just share a small treat with each other. Academic News
January Newsletter
Yesterday, I sent home an email about conference time information for winter conferences. This year, parents will need to sign up on line to reserve a spot. I am unfortunately unavailable the first night, but will be willing to meet at alternative times if the the last two days do not work for your schedule. I look forward to meeting with everyone to share the great things we have been doing in 5th grade, and to share the growth the students have been making. Just as fall conferences, I would like the students to attend with parents. I feel the conferences are about the students, and it benefits them to here the information. Academic News

Additional Information
Tom Feldewerd January Newsletter The students came off a well deserved Christmas break ready to learn and work. This week we assessed the students again with the FAST tests in reading and math. We will share these results at conferences in early February. Please make sure that your child has a set of earbuds or head phones to use at school. We have a few students who do not have any, which makes it difficult for them to use various internet resources that require sound. The media center has only a very few available for all the students, not enough for the entire school. This became a bigger problem when many students throughout the building were taking the FAST test this week. We are fortunate to have 1 to 1 devices per student in 5th grade, and use the computer often. Please see the Year book message at the end of the Newsletter. Remember next week Friday is a half day early release, and Monday January 20 the students do not have school in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Academic News Math- We have started a unit in geometry. The students are investigating triangles and quadrilaterals. Reading-The students have switched to working through the stories in their textbook. They have been discussing personification. Writing-The students are working with appositives Science-The students are studying renewable and non- renewable energy. Social-We are focusing on the beginning of settling and colonization of North America. We studied the French exploration of North America, and we discussed the first English colonies in North America. We will test on this chapter on Wednesday January 15. Additional Information Students will have a HALF DAY on January 17. NO SCHOOL January 20 January 10, 2020 Please continue to keep the weather in mind when students are getting ready in the morning and have students dress for outside recess. (Feel free to copy and paste the message below, and pass on to the parents.) If you would like to purchase your child a yearbook, please do this ASAP! This is very important as the deadline is coming up! The deadline is February 14th. After February 14th, a very limited quantity will be available for purchase on a first-come, first-served basis. Here is the link to purchase an Elementary School Yearbook: https://www.jostens.com/apps/store/customer/1128647/ Albany-Elementary-School/ Thank you for your support, Albany Yearbook Staff We have come to the end of the first trimester. We will be processing all grades accumulated up to this point and sending report cards home soon. I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving with family and friends. Academic News Math- We are continuing our unit on fractions. We finished adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers. We have begun multiplying fractions to whole numbers. When we come back from break we will be multiplying fractions to fractions, and multiplying mixed numbers. Reading-The students finished reading a class novel, Hatchet. They practiced the reading skills and strategies they learned so far through this novel. Since we are at the end of the trimester, reading goals should have been met. Research shows that students who spend time independently reading show higher achievement in school. Writing-The students will begin working on the next writing project that they will complete in December before break. They are writing a conclusion to a story about Santa’s Hat. They will present their story before break, by reading it to the kindergarten class. Science-The students are discussing the layers of the Earth. Social-We finished the unit on the Native Americans, and are now discussing the events that lead to the early exploitation by Europeans, and the meeting of the Eastern and Western hemispheres through the discovery by Christopher Columbus.
